Mr Hutchings was brought up and educated in Oxfordshire before beginning medical training at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. He commenced basic surgical training at The University Hospital of Birmingham where he was appointed as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was appointed to the West Midlands Orthopaedic training programme where he undertook specialist Orthopaedic training at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham and the University Hospital of Birmingham Major Trauma Centre. After becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons he undertook a period of subspecialist training in revision hip and knee replacement surgery at University Hospitals of Leicester.

He was appointed to the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust in 2014. He is a specialist in revision total hip replacement surgery, complex total hip replacement surgery, soft tissue surgery of the hip, total knee replacement surgery, arthroscopic knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. His NHS practice is based at Leicester General Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital. He has a busy private practice at Nuffield Hospital and Spire Hospital Leicester.
